Random events surely add an extra something to an RPG. Sure, there have been freak nature occurrences and such, but there are also the fact that horses aren't the top in the food chain. Now, I've seen many sites try and fail to incorporate RPing with both equine and lupine, so that is out of picture.
I was thinking, that perhaps we'd designate two or three people to randomly show up as a predator, each suiting to the terrain. The events would be at random, and not usually at the same time as another, but it would simulate realistic struggles between predator and prey.Or nature events would be stickied at that point at the top of the board.
Sandy Shores-->this would be a fairly safe terrain seeing as most canine predators don't linger near the beach, so a wolf or coyote attack would be very rare. Perhaps we could utilize weather here at points with harsh storms and tides, though the flooding wasn't long ago. Also, an oil spill may shorten the supply of food.
--Rare coyote attacks
--Drastic tide changes
--oil spill (affecting food supply )
--storms
Rocky Mountains-->Well, the moutons in themselves can be pretty dangerous, and those that abide in them are pretty used to the conditions. The winter would be the worst time with avalanches and cold, but in any season the wind can reach remarkable speeds. Also temperature drops can be pretty unpredictable. Wolves are a likely predator in the lower areas, though when hunger stricken will travel higher. Mouton lions would be the most dangerous as they are ambush predators.
--Wolf/coyote attacks
--Mouton Lion attacks
--Drastic temperature drops
--Very high speed winds
--Winter avalanches
--Spring mud slides
Vast Desert-->Well, the desert is a fairly barren area, and predators are usually small such as foxes or the occasional coyote in less harsh areas. Rattle snakes would be common throughout, so that would be the most likely predator. Sand storms are extremely dangerous since there is very little cover. Drought could be a nature aspect as well and freak storms.
--Rattle snake encounters
--Scorpion encounters
--coyote attacks
--Sand storms
--Freak Storms
--Drought
--Cold spell
Tropical Island--> Being an island, all occurrences are confined to the land area. In tie with storms and tides rising, the island would be affected, especially with oil spills. But, predators would be less in number since there would only be those that were there to start with. A pack of wolves could roam the terrain, and venomous snakes are going to be common. Disease would be a major influence.
--All that apply to the shores
--Wolf/coyote attacks (less wolves)
--Snake encounters
--Disease outbreak
Ocean Cliff--> This would affect all at the ocean cliff at the time. Most of the shores happenings would too affect the cliff, and erosion due to the tides could weaken rock and cause poor footing. Predator wise it would be pretty rare, coyotes of wolves could be a sparse occurrence.
--All that apply to the shores
--erosion
--Rare wolf/coyote attacks
--occasional Mouton lion attack
Lush Fields-->Wolves, what more to say. Wolves track their prey through vast lands and since this is the common mating and birthing place, the best bet would be for wolves to be near. Perhaps too a bear may wander into the scene, drought may also play a factor in food supply.
--Wolf/coyote attacks
--Bear attacks
--Drought
Deep Forest-->Wolves again, they would have sufficient cover to place an attack, as well as bear attacks due to surprise. Forest fires during a drought elsewhere, and rare snake encounters could take place.
--Wolf/coyote attacks
--Bear attacks
--Snake encounters
--Forest fires
once again any of these happenings would tie in with the season. Say in the winter avalanches and cold spells would be most likely, and wolf attacks would be more sparse. The Spring would bring mudslides, disease could start with the temperature change, wolf attacks with the birthing influx, storms and tides changes would be likely, as well as occasional snake encounters. The Summer would come with the drought and fires, more likely wolf and coyote attacks as well as Mouton lion and rare bear attacks, disease and snake encounter. Fall would cause concern toward hurricane type storms, dropping temperatures, motion lion/wolves/coyotes/ and rare bear attacks.
Take in mind that if it were a predator, the person affected Wolf be able to RP through the occurrence and perhaps get out of it, walk away with damage, or not walk away at all, others would be welcome to help. With nature events, anybody in that area would be affected and have to find a way to deal with it. Remember you char's aren't invincible so they would have to take some damage from a major change in their home.
Just an idea ;P
