Sultania pranced into the meadow, and tossed her mane in a proud confident way. She had been traveling for awhile now, and was ready to rest. She snorted and her nostrils took in the scents of the new land she was in; the grass, smelt wonderful, and she leaned down, and began to eat; keeping her ears pricked forward to catch any sounds that might come to her.
She had traveled many days away from her heard. She missed her mother and the other mares of her land, but she knew that is she had stayed she would have staved, and that would have been even worse. Only the old mares stayed, and in some way the thought of the old mother's of her heard staying and perhaps starving broke her heart.
She shook her head and refused to think about the grim scenario, and walked over to a stream. Sultania leaned down to get a drink from the fresh water.

Thanatos couldn't help it, he was proud. His herd had grown at an alarming rate these last few days. He had a prize breeding stock that any stallion would be envious of. In fact, he even had other stallions under his command. He didn't demand too much of them and they gave him their allegiance. It was a good life. A hard life, but good nevertheless. The great stallion was slowly meandering toward the claiming meadow. He stopped every few paces to take a bite to eat. He wasn't really hungry, but the munchies wouldn't go away.
Once, he even paused long enough to take a drink from a stream. Finally, he made it to the meadow. For the first time in days, he only saw one mare. There was no one else in the field. He watched her for a moment, trying to get a feel for her personality. The mare's head was high, obviously proud. He wouldn't be able to play the protector card. She took a drink from the stream, but her ears were still cocked. This mare was actually paying attention to her surroundings. Perhaps he could make her approach him. No, that wouldn't work. The stallion let out a short whinny, announcing his presence.
A moment later, he was pacing just a few lengths from the mare. "Hail, stranger. Why are you in the claiming meadow?" he asked. Thanatos was simply curious. Of course, deep down, he wanted to bring her home. She would make an excelent mother with her attentive presense. But, as always, that would have to wait. An ear cocked behind him, listening. He heard a shrill call from the direction of his homelands. For an instant, great dome turned, both ears giving partial attention to the mares he had left. Something was wrong. Another call. They could handle it. Thanatos was wary. He itched to run home and see what was wrong.

Sultania heard the stallion's voice and turned to see where the noise had come from. She spied him very quickly and tossed her mane in a haughty manor, and swished her tail. He seemed to be fairly friendly, however she wasn't going to let her guard down. She would enjoy finding herself another home, however she would not unwittingly promise herself to a stallion, unless he was worthy of her. She was not like a lot of the love sick mares she had seen in the past, mooning over stallions and waiting for them to arrive to breed them and bare their bastard offspring. Sultania had more pride than that.
She cautiously approached the stallion still keeping a good distance away from him, as she stood tail swishing, in an impatient fashion. Sultania's ears pricked forward curious as she looked the stallion up and down as if to figure out if he was worth her time or not. She face registered nothing but the look of cool detachment as she made her assessment.
"Hail Stallion, I was not aware these were claiming lands. It make so much more sense now, as to why I have seen so many besotted fools chasing after the stallions that come here. Famine has driven me from my lands, and so I've come here looking to make a new life for myself," She said inclining her regal head in a faint bow.
She made no move to leave nor to move closer to him, but instead waited to see what he would say; head cocked faintly to the side. She heard the call from the lands behind the stallion, and she looked past him to the direction of the noise. Because of her heard, she felt the call of her sisters deeply and something seemed amiss with these that called. She noticed the stallion look to the call as well.
"If those are yours, dear Stallion, then something seems to be amiss, if you think your harem is in danger then I advise you see to them," she said walking closer to him, her finely sculpted form gleaming in sun, her small hooves making hardly any noise as she came forward.

Great dome swiveled back to the mare. There was a slight flash of irritation at the mare for imposing upon his judgement, but it was gone as soon as it appeared, almost nonexistent. Thanatos was a pro at concealing his emotions and hardly ever acted on them. Of course, very few things would coax an emotional response from the level-headed stallion. That hadn't always been the case though, when he was younger, he had been a right hothead. Quick to defend himself; quicker to start a fight. Only his tail lashing against his pelt once or twice gave away his irritaion.
"I try very hard not to consider my band a harem. It has horrid connotation. Hearing of another stallion with a harem makes me think of a bunch of mares thrown together with foals. A band, like my herd, is so much more than that," he spoke with a feeling few knew he even had. Thanatos wasn't a pushover by any means. He was just more of the walks-softly-and-carries-a-big-stick type. It seemed to work well for him. Morality usually did. Or was it just his impecable ability to judge how to act around another horse, any horse. Probably b, but allow him the deception of himself.
He turned and listened to another few whistles. He immediately registerred that another mare was angered. The stallion shook his head in exasperation. "You are right, however. If I believed they were in danger, I would go to them. One does not keep my rank for long if one does not have a good head atop his neck." He smiled graciously. This was all small talk, a way for two sophisticated beings to get a lead on each other. This mare was very independent. She would probably go best with a stallion whose attention was entirely fixated on her.
"They're alright, though," he continued, hardly missing a beat. "It sounds as if Anabeth is harrassing young Brimstone. I wouldn't put it past her, but at her age, I can't dispell her and live with my conscience. I hope you don't think less of me..." He added that last bit in an actually concerned way. After the mare's advice on how to run his herd, he had lost his train of thought on her bloodlines, and focussed more on her mind. With certain mares, it was best to have them around as someone to talk to. This was probably one of those. It didn't sadden the stallion in the least. In fact, he wished more horses like this existed. It was a nice reprieve.

Sultania watched the stallion with a faint hint of worry. She did not know if he was a rough brute or not, and would take her. She had heard storied from her mother and others and indeed they had lost sisters the same way. She felt a prick of homesickness, but quickly pushed it out of her mind. It was best that she forget her people. Their time was gone, and it was likely that she would not see the others again; and no amount of grief would make it any less true.
As he spoke Sultania felt herself grow at ease. He seemed better than most stallions she had seen around this land, and the way he spoke of his mares, well he almost seemed to treat them civil. She found the tone he used endearing him to her, and stallion that spoke of her sisters in such a way surely was better than most.
She heard his exasperated tone, and cocked her head to the side, wondering for a moment if what she said and gotten under his skin. The thought made her inwardly chuckle. Sultania thought his tone was somewhat patronizing, and that irritated her a little. He seemed to be a stallion, and no matter how gentle he was and how highly he spoke of his heard; he probably had the ego of a buffalo
She walked over to him, close enough now to be within grabbing distance. She heard the concern in his voice, and gave him a faint smile. He seemed to be a good stallion at heart, however pompous he might be. She looked up at him, with eyes that were not besotted nor where they clouded with adulation. they had respect in them; as well as a tentative offer of friendship. Sultania knew she would never be owned by a stallion, unless by brute force; however a friend would be something more than she had right now, even if it was a stallion.
"No Stallion I do not think less of you, if she is to young to live by herself, then what good would throwing her to the wolves do? The most I could think that you could do is reprimand her possibly with physical actions if necessary, and then tell the younger to keep away from the elder. That is the way disputes where always handled where I hail from," She said her voice soft, and conversational. He would no doubt need to depart soon, however, it was nice talking to him. It was nice to have someone to converse with. It was even nicer to have someone to discuss such matters with.
She lowered her head and stomped the ground impatiently. She was not some simpering female that fell apart at the least little thing, yet hear she was feeling low about her plight. She felt angry over the loss of her heard, as well as the fact that she might show her sadness around the stallion. She was sure he would loose any respect he may have for her, and figure her to be just another overly emotional female. She raised her head after a moment resolutely pushing the thoughts from her mind. She would weep for her heard later, but not while she was in public.
