Knowing he was destined for adventure, Hades began his long journey. Heading out towards the east, Hades bucked and swung his cranium around, excited to finally venture away from his original home.
Finding himself in the middle of a dark and gloomy forest, Hades realized that night had fell, He galloped along, trying to find a good place to rest, not noticing the small creek ahead, Hades tripped and fell into it with a loud splash. Stepping out and shaking his cranium, Hades made sure that no one saw him, After slightly drying off, Hades leaned on a tree on the other side of the creek.
As the sun rose Hades stretched his muscular legs, he continued his journey, slowly walking, he shook the last few water droplets from his pelt. Hearing faint noises ahead, Hades snorted as they irritated him, Keeping his Cranium high, Hades entered the lush, green field with elegance and grace. Pawing the ground slightly, Hades shook, looking out into the distance as his long mane positioned it self in its rightful place, down his face.
Feeling irresistible, Hades pranced around the field, with his cranium high and his long mane and tail flowing swiftly with the wind. Hades waited for someone to notice.

Gertrude
She'd been following him for some time, though by now Gertrude was well practiced in the arts of stealth, as they might say. Especially in a forest, with the sun pushed out by the thick undergrowth, and the darkness hiding her dark coat as completely as clouds might hide a cold, autumn sky. Or so she liked to think. And while Gertrude was loath to enter the forest, the sounds of newcomers led her perpetually on. Now, as she watched the stallion, she even had to stop herself from chuckling when he tipped right into a creek.
He was graceful, though. Something in his motions reminding the mare of a cat as she followed him through the forest. To her home in the Fields, she realized quickly and with a start. Gertrude was becoming something of a wraith now, she knew. Corrupted by her own loneliness with only the wolf, Triskelion, to keep her company. Not good company, in her opinion. She shook her head to push the thoughts out, and veered away. She would cut him off in the great meadows, in the land she knew as perfect as the sky.
As she melted into the undergrowth she couldn't help but feel a terrible anxiety about this stranger. Would he take the Fields by force, drive her out? She didn't know much about the ways of others, having lived a sheltered life with her mother and father in he Rocky Mountains. Gertrude knew even less about stallions. She'd met maybe three in her short life, and only in passing, or when she was too young to remember.
The forest ended abruptly, and she could see the stallion to her right, traveling toward the heart of the territory. Confident of himself, she thought with a shiver, before leaping into a fierce gallop. She tried to think of what to say, to formulate a plan, but all too soon she'd closed the distance, and was slowing to greet him. Gertrude stopped a little ways off, pawing the ground. Her ears twitched against her skull.
"You're trespassing," she said flatly. "Why have you come?"

The obsidian brute turned to face the mare. Hades struck his cranium as high as he could, looking down at her he snorted. "Oh am I now?". he smirked. Moving silently around her, Hades stopped in front of her, His ice blue orbs staring into hers. "mm.. who are you?" He grunted as he swished his tail.

Gertrude
Proud and tall, she thought, not without some annoyance. She couldn't help but shudder when he approached. Gertrude was small, very small actually, when next to most of the horses she'd met. She drew up her head as he had done, met his eyes and said, "Yes," as icily as she could, but really her heart wasn't in it.
His eyes were shocking, the vibrancy seemed to bore into her and she thought vaguely of Gypsum, the pale ghost of a stallion who sometimes haunted the Fields. He and his friend, Nagisa, were the only two other souls she'd seen in a dogs age- vicious predators excluded. Turning anyone away, whoever they were, was terrifying. But so was asking them to stay. Gertrude tried to stand even taller, with little success.
"Gertrude," she said. "My name is Gertrude. I'm the lead here, case you get any ideas, stallion."
Her voice came off a bit too shrilly, she'd admit. Not as authoritative as she'd have liked.

The Stallion smirked at her assumptions. "Ideas?, hmm.." Hades lowered his cranium showing respect to the Lead Mare. "This is a beautiful field.. but not as beautiful as yourself." He smiled as he lifted his head to his usual height. Staring at her up and down and smiled again, as he began to prance around her, his mane flowing in rhythm with his movements

Gertrude
Arrogant, Gertrude thought, but she tried to relax. Being antagonistic wouldn't get her anywhere. Her, or the shell of a herd that lurked here. She sighed. This was her mother's fault, really. If Teheki wasn't so paranoid about stallions, about who she let stay in the meadows, Gertrude would never have been so tense. As it were, her mother's warning swirled in her head. He dropped his head, almost in a little bow, and Gertrude glared. Only a second, before she remembered she should smile.
"Thank you," she laughed, a soft sound, like water in a river. My was he tall! As he began to dance around her, Gertrude found herself dizzy trying to follow. He was like a cat, definately, his motions were so fluid. Cats are dangerous, she reminded herself.
"You never did say who you were or why you've come?"

The stallion stopped, as he looked at her from behind. "Well... Im hades.. and I have come here for a change of scenery I suppose" He smiled. As he moved up next to her he leaned his head over and rubbed it against her, before prancing around again.

Gertrude
"Oh! Well, if that's all," she said over her shoulder. She froze when he came up to her, pressed his head against her own. Just like she did with the mares, she thought, surprised. She wasn't certain how to take that motion. Gertrude skipped after him, suddenly afraid for a second he might leave.
"There's not much to see around here, I'm afraid. Some mangy wolves maybe, if you like kicking them around." Gertrude laughed again, thinking of the scraggly wolf being stomped into the ground. He was around even more now that Gypsum had returned. Strange, that, but then Gypsum wasn't a stallion who ever really defended anyone and probably seemed like easy pickings. In truth, the meadows were pretty barren these days, of excitement and of horses, despite being one of the few livable lands remaining. Gertrude thought briefly of telling Hades about the spirits rumored to be haunting the Fields, the only exciting tale she knew, but thought better of it. Were he superstitious, he might be chased off. And besides, she could save that knowledge for later, just in case he turned out undesirable.
She smiled, kindness and her own less pleasant thoughts mingling together on her face.
"Will you be staying, then?"

"wolves?, they are fun to kill.." The stallion turned to face her again and walked past her, but this time he rubbed his entire bodice against her, He turned his cranium to see her face. "Only if your lovely self will let me.." He went to the front of her and bowed, whilst smiling.

Gertrude
"You've killed wolves!" she cried, unable to contain both the surprise and the excitement that came with that. Ever since the earthquake and the flood, predators had been more common among the herds. So said Teheki, anyway, for she did not know much about the lands outside the Fields anymore. Being a lead had bound her here. The times of her childhood, when her family had often traveled, were long things of the past.
She froze again when he touched her, careful not to leap away too quickly. "You may stay. If you don't antagonize my mares," she said severely. She was thinking primarily, of Nagisa, and of Gypsum's reaction, should the other mare be upset.
"You've really killed wolves?"

The stallion nodded "As a loner I have come across many predators, and well I do have to protect myself.."
Hades laughed at her assumption "Do you really think I would antagonize your mares?" He slightly laughed again..
Hades moved closer to Gertrude. "So when do I meet the lead stallion?" His audits flickered as he waited a reply.

Gertrude
Predators, she thought, and not without awe. Gertrude's young face lit up, all the admiration, all the years of dreaming of adventure alive in her eyes. How long had he been alone? She wondered if the earthquakes had been in his lands too. If he had lands, ever in his life. Some stallions never did settle down.
She tensed when he laughed again. Truly, the emotions of others were alien to her. "I don't know," she said honestly. And then with a wink, "But I do well to protect my mares."
When he approached, she pressed her head against his as a greeting. Late, but she thought it seemed appropriate. "No lead, Hades. There's Gypsum. But, well, he is a friend and he comes and goes unpredictably. Sometimes he brings in strangers, horses he's found in the wilderness," she said, eyes flicking to the far off mountains, their grey tops just visible. "The others left. Driven away by the floods, or the quakes, or the demons. Cowards," she spat.

Hades was surprised to know that there was no lead stallion. He grunted "ah,I see.." Swishing his tail abruptly at the silence, Not knowing what to do to break the silence, he nuzzled her. Pulling a way he smiled.
"Just one question. Will they treat me differently?"....

Gertrude
The question surprised her. "It's been a long time, for everyone here," she said after a moment. "A long time, and a lot of tragedy. They might."
Then, with a weak smile, Gertrude began to walk, deeper into the meadow. A glance over the shoulder, and she beckoned for him to follow. It was a warm day, the last she suspected until the winter came and ended. The sun on her dark back was wonderful, and for a moment she felt safe, content, like nothing in the world could be wrong. And although those unhappy memories still chewed at her very soul, for the time she tried to push them away. To be sensible.
There were certain realities she had learned to accept, and certain things she knew she had no power over. The world itself was one. Sometimes, when the stars fell, and the loneliness of all those awful nights swallowed her, Gertrude had thought to leave. What, after all, was really left here? But then she thought of Dawn, who had saved her life, of Valentine, deep in the mountains and her childhood, and remembered why staying was worth all the terrible effort. For the herd. For the survivors. One day, they would be what they once were. And it would be for her effort.
It was these thoughts, and others, that led Gertrude to the decision she now made, as a dark stranger named Hades followed her among the tall grass. Nothing would be forever. There was only now.
"We're few, and not much of a family. Nothing unites us anymore. Things change, so we will change," she said, and she looked at him very seriously then. "Perhaps they will treat you different. Perhaps it would be better if they did."

Hades flattened his audits, he had been treated like an outcast his whole life, why should things change now? he thought to himself. The stallion went up next to her. "I guess it would be better.." Hades lowered his cranium and began to graze as he watched the mare from the corner of his orb.
