NIAMH ____________________ .:: | WINTER | ::. .:: | LATE EVENING | ::. .:: | KRYPTONITE | ::. The lone dapple-grey mare settled herself down for the cold winter night under a dead, gnarled tree, its branches resembling wicked claws getting ready to grab Niamh and drag her under the ground. Other horses might be afraid of this eerie resting place, but to Niamh, this was simply home. Although there were no bodies buried here, this ravine was crawling with departed souls that had found their way here and never left. They didn't bother her. She left them alone and they returned the favour.
With a small, tired snort, she flopped down underneath the tree, resting her muzzle on the frozen ground, not letting the cold get to her. Her mind was on other things, like Calum. It was bitingly cold and harsh and the foal she had birthed wasn't even a full thirteen moons old, yet. Would he even survive the winter?
I left him in good hands. Delmar will look after him, she reasoned with herself. At least, he would until Calum matured, then there would no doubt be a fight for the herd. That was the way herds worked. It was a precarious hierarchy but Calum would be grown by that point and be able to survive. Delar wouldn't kill him. She knew he wouldn't. He would drive him off and Calum would find another herd to take over or form his own. He would be fine.
The mare looked up at the black sky for a moment, comforted by this thought before resting her muzzle on the ground again and closing her eyes, preparing for sleep.[/blockquote]

Kryptonite.
The bay brute trotted into the mist of the unknown, all he could see were slight shadows moving in the darkness, he pawed the ground and thrashed his cranium around as he snorted, threatening the unknown shadows with his movements. As he continued on holding his cranium low his orbs set straight ahead he noticed what looked to be a grey horse, as he struck his muzzle into the air he took in the scents "a mare" he whispered to himself as he trotted closer.
As he approached the sweet smelling mare he lifted his cranium and snorted as he shook his mane "Hello there, why are you all alone in the dark?" he asked curiously with his tail high [/sub]

As her mind began to go quiet, a low voice in the dark immediately brought her out of her lulled state. With a panicked whinny, she heaved herself to her hooves and whirled around, her silver tail whipping behind her dangerously and her ears flattened against her head.
A stallion. Niamh took a step backwards, eyeing him with suspicion. She had no reason to trust stallions. The ones she came across normally tried to force her into their herds or have their way with her, which often meant her having to fight, then flee. No one was going to chase her away from her home here. If he was just passing through, he was more than welcome to do so, but if he wanted her for himself, she would send him running.
"I was sleeping," she replied cautiously, her ears still flattened and every muscle tense. "I could ask you the same question. Where is your herd?"
He looked alone. That was odd. Horses didn't generally travel alone. Well... she did, but she'd been told she was crazy by many others before. What did this stallion want?

Kryptonite. The brute took a step back as he realized he had startled her. His eyes wondered from limb to limb of the mare, when his gaze met hers he stepped forward "Im sorry, I didn't mean to wake you" he said as he lowered is cranium posing no threat to the mare his orbs still locked on hers. "Im just wandering" he murmured as he lifted his cranium back up slowly "Herd? I have no herd" the words rolled out of his muzzle as he sighed deeply, closing his orbs tightly.[/sub]

Niamh took another step back when the stallion stepped forward again, but unflattened her ears when he lowered his head; a gesture that meant he didn't intend to attack. Huh. This was certainly interesting. Well, she'd hear him out. If he did decide to attack, she could most likely outrun him. He looked heavier than her.
"It's fine. I've dealt with greater tragedies than being disturbed in my sleep," she assured him, her voice laced with a hint of amused sarcasm. Wandering? How... unlikely a coincidence, but judging by his lack of a herd, she figured he was probably telling the truth. "Interesting. So am I. I've never met another lone horse before." she informed him, now more intrigued than anything else. "Herds offer protection... or so they tell me," she added dryly, her dark eyes seeming to sneer.

Kryptonite The bay brute nodded as he pawed the ground and swished his tail slightly. The tall stallion backed away slightly as he shook himself out "Well you just have to be at the right place at the right time I suppose" he grunted. He nipped the air and took a deep breath which ended with a sigh "yes, that is true but than there is the dangers of getting kicked out etc." he said clearly as he began to get annoyed, Kryp never liked talking about herds and such it some what annoyed him.[/sub]

Niamh studied the stallion closely, her eyes always sharp and observant. Hm. His body language suggests discomfort. Interesting, she noted to herself as she listened quietly to what he had to say. Why would talk of herds upset a strong-looking stallion like him? Well, this was certainly going to be an interesting conversation, regardless of how it ended.
"I would argue that everything requires one to be in the right place at the right time," she replied cooly, still studying him closely. "... Well, that is part of herd life, yes. Most stallions recover from it well enough and find other herds." she paused for a moment, interested in his unusual reluctance to discuss the topic at hand. "I take it you are not fond of herds, either? You would be the first stallion I've met to hold a less than desirable opinion of them," she commented mildly, beginning a slow trot around him in a wide circle, sizing him up.

Kryptonite. The sturdy brute flickered his audits as he listened to her "Well yes, but it depends on how badly they are mistreated.." he gazed at his hooves before lifting his cranium to view the mare circling him "Well I guess I better introduce myself" he murmured "Im Kryptonite, but you can call me Kryp" he said with a smile as he lifted his cranium high and flickered his banner slightly "and you are..?" he asked with curiosity. So he was avoiding her question by introducing himself? Well... she supposed she could play along for now. It wasn't really her concern, anyway. If she tried to bully him into telling her more, he might attack or flee and this was the most interesting thing to happen to her in quite a while. She'd like to keep the entertainment going as long as possible.
Stopping her slow trot around him, Niamh very slowly walked up in front of him until their muzzles were only inches apart. "Niamh," she introduced herself with one word before contemplating the name he gave her and turning away from him again, her tail swishing nonchalantly as she trotted away, speaking over her shoulder. "Very well... Kryptonite."
Stopping and turning around again several metres away, Niamh lifted her head to regard the stallion she could now refer to by name. "What brings a lone wanderer through a place like this at night?" Most horses were afraid of this haunting place.

The brute relaxed himself as he gazed up at the dark, starry sky, how it hid everyones faults so well
The brute shook his cranium as she spoke. "well.. I like to travel at night, I love how it makes everything so mysterious" he smiled slightly with a wink

Niamh scoffed, her silver tail swishing back and forth in irritation. What an utter fool. Those were the words of a naive child with no concept of the dangers that lurked around every tree in the dark. That was a response Niamh would have expected out of her son, not a full-grown stallion.
"That is a very foolish notion," she told him, her voice low and calm, seemingly detached from emotion. "If one should travel alone at night, one should be aware of the dangers." Niamh would know all about danger. She'd been traveling on her own for most of her life and she intended to keep it that way. She gave up her own child in order to preserve that freedom, but with freedom came risks. Risks she was well aware of and willing to take.
The memories of the two-leggers that had taken her herd and the wolves who had nearly torn her throat out of her neck washed over her, along with the image of a handsome, buckskin stallion...
The mare gave her head a shake, her dark mane being lifted. she didn't like how this conversation was bringing out these thoughts and memories again. It was best to depart from this foolish stallion and be on her way.
Turning abruptly, Niamh began trotting away to find a more peaceful place to sleep for the night. "I've no time for fools. Good night, Kryptonite, and I'll hope for your sake that your foolishness does not lead to your death."
Idiot, she thought. Horses like that need herds because they are entirely too stupid to function on their own.

The brute thrashed his cranium about and pawed the ground as he lowered his cranium "You don't think that I have already met the dangers that lurk in the darkness? this isn't my first time wandering you know." He grunted silently as he walked in the opposite direction.
Turning his cranium to look at her "Well I see Im not wanted, so I'll be off" he snorted as he reared and galloped off into the night leaving nothing but dirt behind him.
