I just wanna see another blue sky.
Everything was still. A dark filly stomped on the ground. Challenging the small shape in front of her. It snarled and leapt. Its teeth caught on her shoulder and it tore a massive gash on her shoulder. She ignored her pain, focused on the challenger darting beneath her, around her. She stood stock still, tail swishing until the dog, confused by her ‘happiness’ hesitated. Azure struck out. Her hooves pinned the dog on the pen floor. Wheezing for breath, her owner grabbed her halter and pulled her back while a man called John carried his dog away. The man grinned and collected his winnings, then dragged Azure back to her pen. It was boarded with high metal fences, giving her no escape. Grinning savagely again, the man poked her and laughed. He left the gash alone. Not caring if it got infected.
“Fight ‘gain tomorree my pretty”
She lunged at him but a cruel metal chain pulled her back. Consumed in her rage, she reared and tried to pull away again. The man turned and went back in his house.
She was led into the fighting pen once again and she grinned silently to herself. Her azure eyes glinting half with madness, she waited for her opponent. A door slid open and another horse was shoved in. There was something she could focus her rage on. The living, breathing thing. How she would love her scream. The other filly was a pleasure horse, not one for fighting. It trotted up to her and sniffed Azure’s neck. Azure stood still until suddenly lashing out with her teeth. And so the fight began.
Azure woke up from her nightmare. She stood up. Opening her eyes, she looked around her. An owl hooted in a nearby tree and her heartbeat slowed down. She sagged against a tree and sighed. She looked at her shoulder. Using her eyes, she traced down a massive scar that ended on her chest.
“But how did I get out? Who set me free?” She whispered to herself.
“You will find out in the near future my dear.” Azure froze. “Do not be afraid. I am here to help.”
“Who are you? And what do you want with me?” She demanded.
Sighing, a figure stepped out. It was an ivory coloured mare. “I am Kirana, and, as I said before, am here to help.” Kirana stepped forward and flowers seemed to grow under her hooves. “Now wake up!”
Azure woke up. Dawn was on the horizon and she opened her eyes. She glanced at the spot where Kirana had been in her dream and gasped. An assortment of flowers bloomed there. And that wasn’t common… In a bog at least. But there it was, a cluster of flowers. She looked at the rising sun and sighed. “Thank you Kirana, for all you’ve done.” Deep inside her, she felt as if she had seen her mother for the very first time.
